James G.

Sacred Heart University, CT

I spent years with a teacher by my side at school, and when I was finally given the chance to be on my own, I discovered strength I never knew I had. My journey isn’t about what held me back, but about how far I’ve come. I’ve learned that thriving isn’t about being without challenges, but about proving to myself that I can rise above them.

Growing up with multiple learning disabilities and a hearing impairment, James always had a special education teacher by his side in the classroom. While he appreciated and benefitted from the support, he longed for independence. This experience shaped his passion for education and advocacy. Now pursuing a dual major in Interdisciplinary Studies and Special Education, he is committed to making a meaningful impact in the neurodiversity community. His goal is to become a special education teacher who fosters an inclusive classroom where every student feels valued and empowered. Beyond the classroom, he has spent the past two summers working as a behavior technician, facilitating social groups for autistic children, and the last four summers volunteering at an athletic camp for individuals with physical and learning disabilities. These experiences have reinforced his commitment to supporting neurodiverse individuals and creating a more inclusive world.
