Gary S. is a junior at Guttman Community College (CUNY) in Queens, NY, where they are studying English, liberal arts, and political science with a goal of pursuing a career in the arts, social justice, or political activism. Gary enjoys traveling, exploring new restaurants, riding extreme amusement park rides, attending political demonstrations, going to drag shows, and spending time in high-energy social spaces such as concerts, comedy shows, nightlife, and airports where they watch airplanes.
On campus and in the community, Gary serves as President of the Stonewall LGBTQ+ Club at their college and is a youth council member with Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. They also volunteer as an alumni peer leader helping support the development of a future autism social group led by a former middle school special education teacher. Gary joined The Neurodiversity Alliance to advocate for more equitable higher education systems, particularly those that rely heavily on GPA and exam-based eligibility criteria that can disadvantage neurodivergent students. As an autistic student, Gary is committed to advancing Universal Design for Learning and working to change policies that limit access and opportunity for neurodivergent learners in college settings.
