From Mentees to Leaders: Celebrating Neurodiversity at the Lycée

During April, the Lycée community came together to celebrate its first-ever Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a meaningful series of events focused on understanding, inclusion, and student leadership. Through mentorship, conversation, and creativity, students explored the many ways people think and learn while building a stronger culture of allyship and belonging.

For the past seven years, the Lycée has hosted a chapter of The Neurodiversity Alliance’s peer mentoring program, which connects students in Grades 6 through 12 through mentorship, leadership development, and self-advocacy. The program empowers students to embrace their strengths, support one another, and develop confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

Throughout the week, students participated in activities that encouraged open conversations about neurodiversity and mental health. Grade 11 mentors led younger students in an art workshop exploring different thinking patterns, while community members gathered for discussions on accommodations, advocacy, and how to become active allies.

The week also highlighted the impact of long-term mentorship and leadership within the program. Seniors Chase F. and Lilly D., who joined the chapter as sixth-grade mentees during its very first year, now serve as Chapter Leaders helping guide and support the next generation of students.

“Support doesn’t always come from giving answers, but from building trust and creating a space where someone feels comfortable being themselves,” said Chase F. “It changed the way I approach teamwork, friendships, and even how I lead on my sports teams. I’ve become more intentional about making sure people feel heard and supported, because I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference that can make.”

Lilly D. shared a similar perspective on the importance of inclusion and advocacy.

“I enjoy helping students advocate for themselves and also creating a supportive environment,” she said. “My biggest role as the leader is making sure everyone feels included and valued.”

As Neurodiversity Celebration Week came to a close, it left behind more than just memorable activities. It reinforced the importance of creating spaces where every student feels understood, supported, and empowered to lead.
